Work History: Devev - CEO

What I did as a CEO at DEVEV from 2019-04 to 2019-09.

Between Turn 10 and Rec Room, I tried my hand at starting my own business. Inspired by what designers could achieve with tools like Unreal's Blueprint System, I wondered whether the same flowchart-as-code approach could apply to web development. I spent several months building and pitching a product called Devev as part of Y Combinator's Summer 2019 Startup School cohort.

Along the way I met the CEO of Rec Room, Nick Fajt. He was simultaneously interested in the idea while also attempting to lure me into Rec Room. In the end, I decided my odds were better at a growing startup than building a company from scratch, and I joined Rec Room to build an in-game scripting system, Circuits.

Despite the short time I spent on Devev, I learned a lot. I'd never built a website before, yet I created the framework that powers the site you're viewing now. I also gained firsthand experience in starting a business. Along the way, I developed my TypeScript skills to the point of becoming a repeat speaker at the TypeScript Seattle meetup. Although I never worked professionally in TypeScript, many attendees sought out my advice based solely on the work they saw in Devev.
